The strength of the introduction: Does the introduction clearly introduce the central topic of the essay by providing relevant background information? What does the introduction do well? How might it be improved? Offer specific feedback.
The strength of the thesis statement: Does the introduction end with a clear and arguable thesis statement? What might be done to improve the thesis statement?
Topic sentences: Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. A topic sentence also states the point the writer wishes to make about that subject. Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph. It is often the paragraph’s very first sentence. A paragraph’s topic sentence must be general enough to express the paragraph’s overall subject, but it should be specific enough that the reader can understand the paragraph’s main subject and point. Does each paragraph include a clear and well-worded topic sentence? What can be done to improve one or more topic sentences? Be specific.
Evidence: Does each paragraph include evidence in the form of references to outside sources? If direct quotations are included, do they follow the quotation sandwich method and include proper MLA formatting of citations? What suggestions for improvement can you offer?
Conclusion: Does the conclusion reinforce the central argument as stated in the thesis statement and address the broader importance of the topic or issue? Review this overview of conclusions as you evaluate your peer’s conclusion.
