Order Paper NowThis week I read the article, “Open Source Software No Longer Optional” in ACM. This article describes the beginning of the idea of open source software up until modern times. The first record of open source dates back to the 1950s when a group called SHARE working with IBM published applications as source code for use in IBM. Later on an Finnish student names Linus Torvalds began writing code that we would all come to know as Linux. The beauty of open source code comes down to economic necessity. Without open source we would not see some popular startup companies flourish in this day and age. It gives tools to those who could not originally afford to pay for the software.
